How to Set Up Custom Name Servers

Custom name servers allow you to brand your DNS using your own domain, such as ns1.example.com. This article explains how to set them up.

Requirements

  • At least two IP addresses (one for each name server)
  • Access to your domain registrar's DNS settings
  • Access to your server or DNS management panel

Setup Steps

  1. Create A records for your custom name servers:
    • ns1.example.com pointing to IP address 1
    • ns2.example.com pointing to IP address 2
  2. Register the custom name servers at your domain registrar.
  3. Configure the name server software on your server, such as BIND or PowerDNS.
  4. Update your domains to use the new custom name servers.
